The Buzzer Beater!
Woodley Beavers 49 - 47 Woking Blackhawk Ladies
Date: 23rd January 2011
Venue: Bulmershe Leisure Centre, Woodley.
One of the Beavers' first games in Ladies Division One saw them face the defending league champions Woking Blackhawk Ladies. Not overawed by the task at hand, the Beavers pulled off a dramatic victory that the evening's table officals, Clifford Chen and Bruce Lynn, were keen to share ...
Clifford said:
Wow, not often you see a proper buzzer beater to win a game, but thanks to Nikki Welch's final 20 foot shot of the game, Woodley Beavers have managed to do a buzzer beater, beating the current Ladies Champion Woking Blackhawks Ladies.
The sound of the swish has never sounded so great especially we all held our breath when Nikki put the final shot up, the time seem to have stood still and when the ball hit the net, we all knew Nikki had won the game for the team! What a moment! Well done to everyone who played last night, long may it continue.
Bruce followed up with:
Clifford doesn't do the moment justice. The game was a 'Top of the Table' clash that promised to be a titanic battle from the outset. The Beavers gnawed their way to a sturdy 10 point lead in the first quarter only to fall behind by nearly as much on the heels of some sharp long distance bombs by the Blackhawks. Gathering their resolve, the Beavers powered back with swarming defence that forced a strong of turnovers concluded by equally energetic fast breaks. Down by 2 with 8 seconds left, Blackhawks drew a foul and went to the line. The pressure did nothing to phase them and they sunk the baskets to even up. Cliff and I said at the table that it looks like overtime. But Jo took the inbounds pass, motored up the floor, passed to Nikki in the corner, Nikki shot it almost as soon as the pass hit her hands. Swish! Cliff stopped the clock as the ball fell through the hoop. Time remaining - 0.0 seconds (less than 1 tenth of a second left).
Great game and amazing heroic victory.
