About Us

History/Background: Woodley Basketball Club was established back in the late 70's. At that time we only had one team, the game was not as popular and structured as it is today, but there were still quite a number of people playing the sport.

Today, Woodley Basketball Club plays in the Wessex League (which includes teams from Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey and Wiltshire), we have over 50 members in the club and run 7 teams (2 men's team in Division 1, 1 men's team in Division 2, men's and mixed teams in Division 3 and 2 ladies' teams). This makes us the largest local league club in the Reading area.

The most recent glory for the club was winning the 2002/03 and 2003/04 Wessex Men's Division 1 and 2002/03 Men's Division 2 championships.

Club Structure and Finance: We are self financing and not a profit making sports club. During the season, all members pay a monthly subscription of £25 to maintain the club activities. Like many sport clubs, we have a committee who look after the club affairs, and all subscription money is very carefully handled by our club treasurer. Most of our funds go towards court hire, referees' fees and training sessions. The committee is made up of 7 team secretaries, one Treasurer, one General Secretary and one Club Chairman. All committee members are volunteers.

Ethics: Woodley Basketball Club members are mainly adults. We all enjoying playing basketball to win and at the same time, we do enjoy social gathering. "We play hard, and we play hard too".

Other Basketball Activities: Other than Wessex league and cup games (which are played between October and April) we take part in various tournaments during the summer.
